Oakmont Steel Doors is a specialist manufacturer and installer of bespoke internal steel doors, based in Crewe, Cheshire. We design, manufacture, and install made-to-measure black steel doors, fire-rated steel doors, and aluminium doors for homeowners, architects, and developers across England and Wales.

Every door we make is built to order at our Crewe workshop — no stock sizes, no compromise on dimensions, no cutting down standard frames to fit. If your opening is 2,347mm tall and 967mm wide, that is exactly what we make.

What We Do

Our core product is the internal steel door: slim steel profiles, large glass panels, and a powder-coated finish in any RAL colour. The look draws on steel-framed windows of 1920s industrial architecture — refined, functional, and unmistakably architectural. In a residential setting, the effect is transformative: a single door can double the apparent size of a room by opening up sightlines and letting light travel through the whole floor plan.

We offer six product types:

  • Single steel doors — hinged and pivot configurations, single-leaf openings from hallways to studies
  • Double steel doors — French door arrangements for wider openings between kitchen, dining, and living spaces
  • Sliding steel doors — no floor track, ideal for open-plan extensions where swing space is limited
  • FD30 fire-rated steel doors — certified to BS 476 Part 22, required in many residential conversions and HMOs
  • Black steel doors — our most popular range, featuring the classic slim-profile grid pattern
  • Aluminium doors — a lighter alternative with the same slim sightlines, suited to contemporary interiors

Every door is available in 29 bar arrangements and 7 glass types, including clear, frosted, fluted, tinted, wired, and cathedral (reeded) glass.

How We Work

The process is straightforward. You send us your opening dimensions — rough width and height — along with your preferred bar arrangement, glass type, and frame colour. We then quote either supply only or our full measure and install service. If you’re happy with the price, we arrange a templater to visit you if you’ve chosen Measure & Install or we confirm your final measurements if just supply only.

Once we have the final measurements we created a technical drawing for your approval, which will include the frame colour, bar design, glass type, opening direction and active door. Confirm the lead time (typically 8–10 weeks for steel doors, 10–16 weeks for fire-rated steel doors, or 6–8 weeks for aluminium doors), and take a deposit to enter production.

Your door is then manufactured at our workshop, quality-checked against the approved drawing, and then either delivered to your address for your own joiner to fit, or installed by our own team depending on your location and preference. We supply full fitting instructions with every order and remain available by phone and email throughout.

We work with homeowners managing their own projects, architects specifying for residential and commercial clients, main contractors fitting out developments, and interior designers sourcing statement pieces for high-end refurbishments. The ordering process is the same for all — clear, straightforward, and without the delays that often come with bespoke manufacturing.

Why Steel Doors

The question we are asked most often is: why choose steel over timber? The honest answer is that it depends on what you are trying to achieve.

Timber is a good material for doors. It is well understood, widely available, and easy to repair. But timber doors have a ceiling on what they can look like — the material imposes a minimum frame width that limits how much glass you can include without compromising structural integrity.

Steel has no such ceiling. The material’s inherent strength allows frame profiles as slim as 25mm — roughly a third of the minimum practical timber frame. More profile means more glass, and more glass means more light. In the open-plan extensions and kitchen-dining rooms where our doors are most often specified, that difference in light transmission is the reason the project looks the way the architect intended rather than slightly compromised.

Steel doors also last considerably longer than timber equivalents when correctly installed. Our powder-coat finish is applied  baked on — it does not peel, crack, or require repainting. The steel frame itself, protected from moisture by the finish and by correct installation, will outlast the building’s other joinery many times over.
