FD30 Fire Rated Doors

At Oakmont Steel Doors, we supply and install FD30 fire-rated internal steel doors for residential and commercial properties across England and Wales. Our fire-rated doors combine the slim, industrial aesthetic of our standard steel door range with the safety certification required by UK Building Regulations — so you don’t have to compromise on design to meet your legal obligations.

What are FD30 Rated Doors?

FD30 is a fire resistance classification defined by British Standard BS 476 Part 22 (and its European equivalent EN 1634). The “FD” stands for Fire Door, and the “30” indicates the door provides a minimum of 30 minutes of fire integrity — meaning it will resist the passage of flames and hot gases for at least 30 minutes in the event of a fire.

Our FD30 doors are constructed using the same slim steel frame system as our standard internal doors, with the addition of intumescent seals fitted into the frame. These seals expand when exposed to heat, sealing the gap between the door and frame to prevent fire and smoke from passing through.

Each door is supplied with a full certificate of conformity, confirming it meets the required standard. This documentation is required by building control officers when signing off new builds, extensions, and conversions.

Do I need a FD30 rated Door?

Whether you legally require a fire door depends on the type of property and the specific location of the door within it. Under Approved Document B of the UK Building Regulations, fire doors are required in the following situations:

  • Houses with three or more storeys — all doors opening onto the staircase enclosure must be FD30 fire doors
  • Loft conversions — typically require fire doors on all rooms opening onto the escape route
  • Garage-to-house connections — the door between an integral garage and the house must be an FD30 fire door
  • Commercial and HMO properties — fire door requirements vary significantly; a fire risk assessment is required
  • New builds and extensions — building control will specify which doors must be fire-rated

If you are unsure whether your project requires a fire door, we recommend consulting your local building control officer or a qualified fire risk assessor.
