Folding Steel Doors
The space saver for when there is not much room in front of the opening
The space saver for tight openings
A folding steel door folds back on itself in two or more leaves, so it opens without the swing room a hinged door needs. That makes it the answer where there is not much space in front of the opening: a hallway, a kitchen with an island close to the doorway, or a room where furniture sits near the door. Open, the leaves stack neatly to one side and the whole opening is clear.
When a folding door is the right choice
- There is little room in front of the opening for a door to swing.
- Furniture, an island or a radiator sits close to the doorway.
- You want the full width of the opening clear when it is open, for example between a kitchen and a dining or garden room.
- A sliding door is not an option because there is no wall to slide along.
Not sure which type?
Hinged doors close tightest and suit the everyday door between rooms. Sliding doors need no swing room but do need wall space to slide along. Folding doors need neither, which is why they win where space is tight. Send us a photo of the opening and we will tell you which suits it best.
Made to measure, like every door we make
Folding doors use the same slim welded steel profiles as our hinged and sliding doors, so a folding door in one room matches the hinged door in the next. Every door is made to your opening in our Crewe workshop.
- Two, three or more leaves to suit the width of the opening, folding to one side or both.
- Any RAL colour; black is the most popular, and we can match a colour you already have or offer metallic finishes such as bronze.
- Clear, frosted, grey tint, bronze tint, wired, fluted or cathedral glass. See our glass options.
- Bars to your design, from a single clear pane to our 29 standard layouts.
- Pull handles with a magnetic latch, or lever handles with a lock.
- Lead time typically 8–10 weeks. Templated and fitted by our own team across England and Wales.
Frame sizes and depths are on the technical specifications page.
Common questions
How much room do folding doors need to open?
Very little. Each leaf folds against the next, so the stacked doors take up roughly the width of one leaf at the side of the opening rather than swinging out into the room.
Can folding doors be fire-rated?
No. Our FD30 fire doors are hinged only. If you need a fire door, see our internal fire doors.
How wide can a folding door be?
Wider openings are handled by adding leaves rather than making each leaf larger. Tell us the opening size and we will propose the leaf layout.
